Here is the Third and final of our series of interviews for the National Theatre’s touring production of War Horse coming to the Sydney Lyric Theatre in February. Our last chat is with Topthorn Horse puppeteer, Zoe Halliday. Some of the questions were sent in by our readers, I have acknowledge them when used.

How long the War Horse production has been performing?
[Question provided by Margaret]

War horse has been in production for nearly 11 years now. This tour however is the first time it has travelled the world which is really exciting. It is a real privilege to bring the show to audiences who have never seen it before.

When watching War Horse the puppeteers seem to almost disappear. What movements are vital in bringing the horses to life on stage? [Question Provided by Elisha]
Team work is what’s vital to brining the horse to life. The movements themselves aren’t possible without all three puppeteers working together and most importantly listening to each other. If no one notices us in the horse we are doing our job well!

Favourite production you’ve been involved with (apart from this one!)?
National theatre of Scotland’s new works production “The Reason I Jump”. Show that is very close to my heart and based on an incredible book (which you should read!)

What is the most valuable piece of advice that you have been given?
Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.

Who has inspired you the most personally or professionally?
My parents Ian and Janette. Throughout my life they have shown me the best ways to be a good human being. They are massively supportive of my career and I couldn’t have achieved any of it without them.

A hobby you have beyond the theatre?
Skiing! My brother runs BASS ski school in Val D’sere, France so I have easy access to the slopes and go out as often as I can.

If you could send out a tweet that would reach the entire world, what would it say?
Don’t forget how to show compassion; to yourself, to each other and to the world.
