Spoiler alert! This show is a little gem. Which isn’t to say it’s purrrfect (those of you who have seen or will see the show, will get the joke).
What Doesn’t Kill You Blah Blah Blah, is a crackling little cabaret that moves along quickly with two great performances from Tyler Jones and Erin Hutchinson. It’s a musical tribute to those lucky types who have survived obscure near death experiences, delivered tongue in cheek, in a variety of styles… I don’t often get to hear a calypso melody and a rock opera rendition in the same show!
Definite highlights were the musical within a musical “Sylacuaga, Alabama”, which tells the story of Ann Hodges, a 50’s housewife who was hit by a meteor and Tyler Hutchinson’s delivery of “I’m On Fire” within it….( soooo Freddie Mercury) and a well delivered audience participation piece, where we hear about the lucky Violet Jessop, who survived three shipwrecks, including The Titanic… (go Vi!).
Structurally, I felt the show could have been a little tighter and clearer. It smoothed out in the second part, but at times earlier on, I felt it the transitions to different stories and characters were a little jarring and unclear. I attended on opening night and this may alter during the run. Oh and there are a few too many pooh jokes for me…
All things considered What Doesn’t Kill You Blah Blah Blah, is a fun night out, in a lovely venue (downstairs at The Maj),professionally delivered by two talented performers, who would be a definite drawcard to me for any other shows. Enjoy!
What Doesn’t Kill You Blah Blah Blah runs to 9th Feb at 9pm Downstairs at The Maj, 825 Hay St, Perth
