On Friday I had the pleasure of going to Jack and the Beanstalk at the State Theatre. There was a lot to like about this production, but some highlights for me were when Jack (Lachlan Dearing) saved Princess Crumble (Anastasia Feneri) and got married, when Simple Simon (Jimmy Rees) did the floss, and the 3D part. That’s right guys, they made 3D theatre! At the start of the show we were all given special 3D glasses which we didn’t have to use until act 2. Once we got into the Giant’s castle we had to put on our glasses and everything came to life! There were skeletons, big spiders, bees, and even a huge Giant’s arm reaching out towards you. I’m not going to lie, it was pretty scary…but don’t let that put you off, because it was also super fun!
One of the funniest parts of the show was when Simple Simon had to pass really hard tongue twister messages between King Crumble (Peter Rowsthorn) and Fleshcreep (Luke Joslin). I don’t know how they can talk so fast! There was also a great performance of the ‘Who’s on First’ routine which made me and my friend Lilly laugh a lot.
I really liked the amount of audience participation throughout the show too. We were able to have a ‘Floss -off’ with Simple Simon, and call out “Boo” whenever Fleshcreep came onstage. We cheered for the beautiful Fairy Crystal (Lucy Durack) who was there to help Jack, and 3 kids even got chosen to go onstage and sing a silly version of Old MacDonald had a farm!
The scenery was all very beautiful, and I liked all the singing and dancing. I saw Sleeping Beauty here last year, but this was even better. Definitely recommended for families with kids my age (I’m 7!). I’ll be telling all my friends to go!
